Zooming in closer to the chart from 1939, you can see information about depths and what was known about bottom habitats in the area around East and West Flower Garden Banks. The following abbreviations were used: Co=coral, S=sand, Sh=shells, M=mud, P=pebbles. A marking of "Co" does not tell us whether live coral or coral skeletons were known to the area at that time.

NORTHWESTERN GULF OF MEXICO

There are numerous named banks found across the continental shelf of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Many of these appear to be both biologically and geologically connected to the sanctuary. As a result, some of these are under consideration for sanctuary expansion as part of our Management Plan Review.
