Ever wondered how a mooring buoy is held in place? Metal u-bolts are cemented into the sea floor. This operation took place at West Flower Garden Bank in September 2024.

A new u-bolt with a new mooring attached using a soft shackle instead of a metal one. The small, subsurface buoy mid-way to the surface helps relieve some of the pressure on the u-bolt and will hopefully help it last longer. (Video: Cara Wendel/Texas State Aquarium)
